Table Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau side table in carved walnut and marble. French, 20th century…
Rectangular in overall form, the structure shows arts and crafts or gothic revival influences. It stands on two wide, shaped uprights with fluted edges and curved toes. These uprights are joined by a shaped top-piece that houses the marble, a pierced double-arch connector with palmette motifs, and a spacer below.
The outer sides of the uprights are richly carved in high relief with stunning art nouveau motifs. Each depicts a maidens face, angled slightly and with a downward glance, with flowing curls and breastplate that gradually become one with the surrounding cascade of holly leaves, berries, thorns and stalks.
Topped with a fitted and removable Carrara marble in white with gray highlights, with beveled edges and a lustrous satin finish.
Overall in very good condition. Some minor damage to the wood beneath the marble (not visible), a repair to the double arch connector, and a small loss at one of the feet.
The delicate, atmospheric and expressive carving is superb, capturing the absolute essence of Art Nouveau. A very special piece.
