A set of seating furniture consisting of a pair of armchairs and a small sofa in carved and painted beechwood and upholstery. French, stamped JB Lebas, 18th century.

Highly architectural in design. Richly carved all over in superb detail and clarity. Straight, flat seat backs supported on each side by detached fluted columns, topped with stylized acanthus leaf capitols and stylized plumes. Seat back 'en chapeau'. Fluted armrests topped with Greek key motif. Shaped seat rests on 4 turned and fluted legs.

Original gray paint. Newly upholstered in a fine blue and gray silk droguet from Tassinari & Chatel and passimenterie by Houles.

The two armchairs bear the stamp of Parisian menuisier (master joiner / chairmaker) Jean Baptiste Lebas (1729 - 1800, awarded master joiner in 1756). The pieces also bear an inventory stamp 'C' (see photos), and the label of a Parisian garde-meuble can be found on the sofa (see photos). Louis XVI period, late 18th century, circa 1785.

Excellent overall condition, displaying incidental wear as normal for age. Structurally sound with only minor restorations. The highly detailed carving is fresh and crisp. The paint is original and retains a nice patina. The upholstery is newly done.

This is a stunning set of furniture, of charming proportions. The carving is highly engaging and displays great originality. These pieces represent the absolute apex of quality, craftsmanship, and inventiveness of furniture making in France in the Louis XVI period.
