Commode Transition 'Petit'

A commode in marquetry, bronze and marble, attributed to Nicolas Petit. French, mid 18th century...

Exceptional chest of drawers consisting of three full-width drawers in three rows across a shaped front with a protruding central section. Veneers of geometric-patterned marquetry of satinwood, violet and rosewood. Decorated in gilt bronze ornamentation. Topped in white-veined gray marble, and standing on small, curved feet.

French, epoque transition Louis XV – Louis XVI, mid 18th century, circa 1770. This commode bears no stamp, but is attributed to the Parisian ebeniste Nicolas PETIT.

Superb condition – restored, French polish refreshed. Original locks, no keys. It is likely that the marble top, while 18th century, was not originally made for this commode.

The stunning marquetry places this commode in a rare class – the intricate pattern and careful juxtaposition of woods and grains put the remarkable skill of the cabinet maker on full display.

This commode has lovely proportions and a judicious use of gilt ornamentation. French polish finish with a warm patina. Very elegant piece.
