Commode Regence

Regence-style commode, walnut. Belgian, late 19th / early 20th century...

A very fine Regence-style chest of drawers, in walnut with richly carved rococo motifs. Belgian, Liege, late 19th – early 20th century.

With curved side panels and a breakfront face that houses 3 full-width drawers. Standing on curved legs with lion’s paw feet. Topped with a thick (3 cm) slab of shaped and molded marble in rose, red, and tan with black and white veining.

The body is solid walnut, the drawer interiors are oak. The drawer pulls are bronze with a dark brown patina that effectively blends with and extends the rococo motifs of the carved woodwork. Each drawer has a functioning lock, and there are 2 keys.

The expressive and refined carving of this piece is typical of furniture from Liege, with its nod to the grand and elegant interiors of 18th century France.

Excellent condition overall. Some small scratches and losses as to be expected for age. The left rear foot is missing a small part of one of its toes (see photo).

A stunning piece with generous proportions and real presence. Standing proudly, this piece beautifully captures the exuberant spirit of the of rococo.
