Commode in Floral Marquetry

Transition period chest of drawers in floral marquetry of exotic woods, bronze, and marble. French, 18th century…

The oak and pine carcass has a slightly curved façade that houses four drawers in three rows. The top row contains two short drawers separated by a decorative spacer, the two lower rows each house a single full width drawer.

Rich marquetry decoration on sides and front, in veneers of dyed and stained rosewood and other exotic woods, depicting flowing stems with leaves and blossoming flowers, within Greek-inspired borders. Finished in a rich and lustrous French polish.

Decorated with beautifully executed gilt bronze ornamentation – drawer pulls, key, escutcheons, feet, and other decorative elements. Topped with a shaped and polished gray and white marble ‘gris saint Anne’. Four working locks and one key.

In very good overall condition. Restored cracks on the left and right side panels. Veneer replacements / restorations visible. Restorations / reinforcements to the interior. Wear to areas of the bronze gilding.

Stunning marquetry – intricate and detailed floral designs against a beautifully balanced background of warm wood tones and colors. A very special piece.
