Low Armchair Louis XV

A large low armchair in carved walnut and upholstery. French, 18th century…

A large ‘fauteuil bas’ or low armchair in carved walnut and upholstery. With a large flat back, curved arm rests that meet the side rails with a discreet flourish, and a generous seat. Raised on short curved legs bearing a simple carved floral motif at the knees. The nut-brown frame has a deep, warm patina and lovely polish.

French, from the Louis XV period, 18th century, circa 1760.

Upholstered in a cut and woven polychrome velour of large floral design in rose, cream, rust and gray, on a rose ground.

In excellent condition. Woodwork solid and joints firm. Minor old restorations visible in the photos. Upholstery in excellent condition, and the seat interior retains its original 18th century canvas webbing (still in excellent condition).

Wonderfully shaped frame, where the restraint of the carving lets the imaginative and decisively shaped undulations become the focus. Also notable is the size and depth of the seat, which make this an inviting and comfortable chair. A very special low armchair, very large and comfortable. Rare.
