A desk in mahogany, bronze, and leather, French, 19th century...
Empire-style desk in mahogany, bronze, and leather, finished on all sides. French, 19th century, circa 1890.
The façade houses 4 drawers: 2 drawers one above the other on the left side; one wide drawer across the middle; and one double-deep, sectioned drawer on the right side with a façade imitating the 2 drawer left side. Standing on 4 straight legs that terminate in lion paw feet.
Decorated all over in very beautiful and rich ornamentation of finely chased gilt bronze, including stylized classical motifs with angels and women, cascading garlands of laurel, and architectural details. The 4 legs terminate in bronze lion-paw feet. The left and right sides of the desk are decorated with a diamond-shaped bronze inlay. The back side of the desk mirrors the front side, with faux drawers and matching bronze work.
The desk is topped with the original tooled leather, which has been beautifully restored. There are slide-out extensions on each side.
The desk has the original locks and 4 keys.
In superb condition. Has a warm patina and a presence that commands attention yet is understated and refined. A versatile size that can work in smaller or larger rooms.
