A nice Louis XVI bergere in carved and painted beechwood and upholstery, stamped by FC Menant, French, 18th century.

Large, flat back, enclosed armrests, a flared seat and shaped front seat rail. On 4 turned and fluted / stop-fluted legs. Richly carved all over with typical Louis XVI motifs including acanthus leaves, pearls, and twisted rope. Painted in an off white / crème color paint.

Upholstered in a royal blue silk velour fabric. Includes a loose seat cushion and roller cushion.

Stamped by the Parisian menuisier (master joiner / chairmaker) Francois Claude Menant (1757 - 1793, awarded master in 1786), this chair was made circa 1788.

Excellent overall condition, displaying wear as normal for its age. Structurally sound with some old restorations. The upholstery is in excellent condition.

This chair, with its straight lines, angular form, and decorative motifs, was made on the eve of the French revolution in the epitome of the Louis XVI style. A comfortable chair, it sits quietly and proudly and conveys a pleasing sense of reserved formality.
