Armchair Transition 'Courtois'

An armchair in carved and painted beechwood and upholstery, stamped N.S. Courtois. French, 18th century...

With a large flat violin shaped backrest, curved and padded armrests that connect to the apron at the knees with a flourish, and a wide and deep seat. It stands on four straight, tapered and fluted legs. The crest and seat rails are decorated with beautiful neo-classical motif carvings of covered urns flanked by garland swags.

Finished in a soft gray paint, and newly upholstered in a tan and green silk by Tassinari & Chatel, with trimming by Houles.

French, 18th century, circa 1770.

Stamped on underside of back seat rail ‘N.S. Courtois’ and 'JME' (the stamp of the Jurande). Nicolas Simon Courtois, awarded master joiner in 1766.

In excellent condition – woodwork and joinery solid and newly upholstered. Nice finish / patina to the paint.

A truly elegant transition armchair with a strong Louis XVI spirit - restrained, refined, and classical.
