Armchair Louis XV

Armchair in carved beechwood with caned seat and back, French, 18th century…


With a flat, shaped back, curved armrests, and a wide seat. Back and seat caned. Curved armrests, and curved feet ending in scrolled toes (losses to one). Decorated all over with asymmetrical carved rococo motifs of leaves, swirls and stylized cartouches.

The seat fitted with a tan leather squab cushion.

Early Louis XV period, circa 1740.

In fair, to-be-restored condition. Some losses and damages. Old restorations and reinforcements to the underside. Some looseness to the joints. Caning in generally good condition, with a few small losses to the back.

Full of character (as well as some battle scars), this chair is a typical example from the early Louis XV period.
