Empire period armchair in carved beechwood and leather upholstery, attributed to Jacob-Desmalter. French, 1st Empire, circa 1805.

With a flat square back, and large trapezoid-shaped seat with curved front rail. Resting on tapered baluster legs in the front and saber legs in the back. Finely sculpted all over with decoration typical of the period including rosettes and palmettes. Upholstered in a tan / soft-yellow-colored leather.

This armchair bears no stamp, but is attributed to Jacob-Desmalter.

In good condition. Structurally solid - traces of old woodworm visible in some areas (see photos), but this does not affect the structural integrity. Wood was previously painted. Upholstery is in good condition but the leather shows some light fading and minor staining (on the right armrest, edges of seat etc.).

This is a large, comfortable armchair of nice proportions. It displays a classical purity of line and decoration, presenting a sober elegance that still looks modern and smart today. Would be a wonderful complement to any room, but particularly an office, study or library.
