Bergere of carved and cream painted beechwood. Upholstered in a royal blue silk velour fabric. Richly carved all over with typical Louis XVI motifs including acanthus leaves, pearls, and twisted rope. Straight, flat seat back, flared seat and shaped front seat rail. On 4 turned and fluted / stop-fluted legs. Loose seat cushion and roller cushion.

Stamped by the Parisian menuisier Francois Claude Menant (1757 - 1793, awarded title master joiner in 1786), the chair was made in circa 1790.

Excellent overall condition, displaying wear as normal for its age. Structurally sound. Minor restorations in numerous places. Paint distressed in places. The upholstery is in excellent condition.

By a Parisian joiner on the eve of the French revolution, this chair, with its straight lines, angles, and decorative motifs, is in high Louis XVI style. A comfortable chair that sits quietly and proudly, it conveys a pleasing sense of reserved formality.
