French transition period armchair. Carved beechwood painted gray. Newly upholstered in Tassinari & Chatel silk fabric with trimming by Houles.
Stamped on underside of back seat rail ‘N.S.Courtois’. Nicolas Simon Courtois, awarded the title master joiner in 1766.
Overall, a beautifully balanced armchair. Transition style with a strong Louis XVI spirit. Woodwork and upholstery in excellent condition. Nice patina. Lovely use of the neo-classical motifs of covered urn flanked with garland swags in the carved decoration of the cresting rail and apron - restrained, refined, and classical.
